From ergonomic comfort to warm lighting and everyday movement, here’s how I transformed a small corner of my home into a workspace that supports both productivity and well-being.
Why I Wanted My Home Office to Feel Different
Working from home has completely changed how I think about my workspace.
When your home is also your office, it’s easy to spend hours sitting at your desk, moving from one project to another without realizing how little you’ve moved throughout the day.
I’ve learned that creating a comfortable workspace isn’t just about productivity. It’s also about having an environment where I can feel relaxed, move freely, and genuinely enjoy spending time.
As a work-from-home cat mom, space is especially important. I don’t have a large dedicated office, so my desk occupies a small corner of my home. Between working, taking breaks, and having my cat wander around, I wanted to make sure the area never felt too crowded.
My goal was simple: create a workspace that feels less like a traditional office and more like a cozy, functional part of my home.
That meant focusing on a few things that matter most to me: comfort, movement, lighting, and the little details that make everyday routines more enjoyable.
Making the Most of a Small Space

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that having a smaller workspace doesn’t necessarily mean sacrificing comfort or functionality.
In fact, limited space has made me more intentional about what I bring into my home.
I wanted enough room to move around throughout the day without constantly rearranging furniture. Keeping my floor relatively open also means my cat has space to explore without navigating around unnecessary clutter.
A big part of making this possible has been my UPLIFT standing desk.
Its height-adjustable design gives me the flexibility to switch between sitting and standing without needing two separate work areas. The desk has become the foundation of my setup, allowing me to create different working environments within the same small footprint.
More recently, I added an UPLIFT Inclining Walking Pad underneath the desk to incorporate more movement into my day.
I shared my experience in a dedicated UPLIFT Walking Pad review, including how it fits into my limited workspace and helps me get more daily steps while working.
What I love most is having options. I can sit when I want to focus, stand when I need a change of pace, or walk during lighter tasks like checking emails.
And when I’m finished, I can move the walking pad aside to free up valuable floor space.
For a small home office, that flexibility makes a meaningful difference.
Prioritizing Comfort Without Sacrificing Style

While I love having the option to stand and walk, I also spend plenty of time sitting at my desk.
Whether I’m writing, editing content, or working through a long project, having a comfortable place to sit is essential.
That’s why I decided to incorporate the NOUHAUS Ergo Fluido X1 ergonomic chair into my workspace.
I wanted a chair that was designed with ergonomics in mind but didn’t make my home feel like a corporate office.
With such limited space, appearance matters too. I prefer furniture that feels intentional and fits naturally with the rest of my home rather than bulky office equipment that dominates the room.
The Ergo Fluido X1 brings together the modern aesthetic I was looking for with an ergonomic-focused design.
But beyond the chair itself, I’ve also become more conscious of my sitting habits.
I try to avoid spending too much time in any single position, even when I’m comfortable. Having the ability to alternate between my chair, standing desk, and walking pad encourages me to change positions more frequently.
I’ve realized that workspace wellness isn’t necessarily about finding the perfect chair or desk. It’s about creating an environment that gives you the flexibility to work in ways that feel comfortable throughout the day.

How Lighting Changes the Entire Mood of My Workspace
Once I had the functional elements of my office figured out, I started thinking more about the atmosphere.
Lighting is one of those details that can completely change how a room feels, especially when your workspace is part of your living environment.
I personally don’t enjoy working under harsh overhead lighting all day. I prefer softer, warmer tones that make the space feel more inviting.
That’s why I incorporated Nanoleaf Elements into my setup.

I love how the lighting adds warmth and character without taking up valuable desk or floor space. It also complements the natural tones of my desk and the overall cozy aesthetic I wanted to create.
During the day, I prefer a brighter environment for focused work. But as the afternoon turns into evening, I enjoy transitioning to softer ambient lighting.
It’s a small change, but it makes my workspace feel much more relaxing.
Rather than having a desk that constantly reminds me I’m working, I wanted a space that could naturally transition into the rest of my home.
The Little Rituals That Make Working From Home More Enjoyable
Beyond furniture and lighting, I’ve found that some of the simplest details can make the biggest difference in how I feel throughout the day.
One of my favorite additions is a scented candle.
There’s something about lighting a candle before settling into a project that makes the experience feel more intentional.
I love warm, comforting scents that complement the ambient lighting and help create a cozy atmosphere.
Sometimes I’ll light a candle while writing, enjoy a cup of coffee, and put on some background music. These little routines make my workspace feel more personal and less like somewhere I simply sit to get work done.
Of course, being a cat mom means taking extra precautions. I keep candles away from curious paws, never leave a flame unattended, and am mindful that fragrances can be irritating to cats.
For me, creating a relaxing workspace doesn’t require a complicated routine. It’s about finding those small moments of comfort that make an ordinary workday more enjoyable.
Creating a Workspace That Supports My Well-Being
After gradually putting my home office together, I’ve realized that my ideal setup isn’t defined by how much equipment I have or how aesthetically perfect everything looks.
It’s about how the space supports my everyday routine.
My UPLIFT standing desk and walking pad help me incorporate movement without needing a larger office. The NOUHAUS Ergo Fluido X1 gives me a dedicated place to sit comfortably during focused work sessions. Nanoleaf Elements and a lit candle help bring warmth and a sense of calm into the environment.

These additions serve different purposes, but together they help create a workspace that feels balanced.
I can focus when I need to, move around when I’ve been sitting for too long, and enjoy a softer atmosphere when I want to slow down.
And importantly, there’s still enough room for my cat to wander around and keep me company.
My Ideal Workspace Is One That Feels Like Home
My workspace is still evolving, and I’m sure I’ll continue making little changes along the way.
But I’ve learned that a good home office doesn’t have to be large, expensive, or filled with the latest technology.
Sometimes, it’s about making better use of the space you already have.
For me, that means prioritizing comfort, leaving room for movement, choosing lighting that makes the environment feel welcoming, and incorporating small details that bring a little joy into my daily routine.
I don’t want my home office to feel like a separate corporate environment squeezed into my living space.
I want it to feel like home.
Because at the end of the day, the best workspace isn’t just one that helps you get more done. It’s one that makes you feel good while you’re there.
