It’s that time of year: new schedules, new classes, and a little bit more chaos.
Back-to-school season can feel both exciting and overwhelming, especially when you’re trying to get the whole family back into a routine after a slower summer. Between packed lunches, homework, extracurriculars, and keeping the house somewhat organized, it can feel like there’s always something to remember.
Luckily, a few simple routines can make the transition a little easier. From creating a designated drop zone to finding a laundry detergent that can keep up with your family, here are five easy back-to-school organization hacks to help make the school year feel a little less chaotic.
1. The Five-Minute Backpack Reset

Having a daily reset routine can help keep everyone organized during the transition back to school. After school, have children empty out their backpacks and lunch boxes before they get too comfortable.
Throw away old wrappers, remove leftover food, take out any papers they no longer need, and make sure homework and important notes are in the right place. This can also prevent odors, crumbs, and mystery food from building up at the bottom of a backpack.
Making this a daily habit only takes a few minutes and can make mornings much easier when everything is already where it belongs.
2. Prep Tonight, Stress Less Tomorrow

To avoid the classic morning panic, prep as much as possible before bed.
Pack lunches, lay out outfits, fill water bottles, and make sure backpacks are ready to go. Double-check that homework is in the right school folder and that your child has everything they need for the next day.
You can even create a simple checklist for kids to follow before bedtime. The more you can get done the night before, the less you’ll have to worry about when everyone is trying to get out the door in the morning.
A little preparation can go a long way toward creating a simpler back-to-school morning routine.
3. Make Laundry Day a Little Easier

Between grass stains, lunch spills, art projects, and everyday wear, kids can go through a lot of clothes during the school year.
That’s why investing in a really good laundry detergent can make your routine a little easier. Too many detergents contain harsh ingredients that can be tough on sensitive skin and the environment. I love the brand Dirty Labs, which makes non-toxic, biodegradable, and septic-safe products.
The ingredients are eco-friendly while still being powerful enough for everyday messes. I would recommend their Bio Enzyme Laundry Detergent, which features Phytolase technology and five-in-one enzyme cleaning.
Alternatively, Koala Eco’s Mandarin & Peppermint Essential Oil Laundry Detergent is another good option. It’s eco-friendly and contains enzymes to help with stain removal.
With school clothes going through the wash on a regular basis, finding a detergent you love can make back-to-school laundry feel a little less daunting.

4. Give Everything a Place to Go

If backpacks, shoes, jackets, and lunch boxes tend to end up scattered throughout the house, create a designated drop zone.
Choose an area near the entrance where your kids can drop all their things as soon as they walk through the door. Add hooks for jackets and backpacks, a basket for shoes, and a specific spot for lunch boxes or water bottles.
The key is to make the system simple. If everything has a designated place, kids are more likely to actually put their belongings there.
A drop zone can also save you from the morning scavenger hunt when everyone is trying to find the missing backpack or one very important shoe.
5. Label Everything

Labels are an underrated way to stay organized during the school year.
Label books, school supplies, lunch containers, water bottles, jackets, and other personal items. Not only can labels make it easier to keep track of belongings, but they can also help children learn where everything goes and where to put things away.
This is especially helpful for younger kids who are still developing their organizational habits. When everything has a clear place, cleaning up becomes a little more straightforward.
And, of course, labeling personal items can help prevent those beloved water bottles, sweatshirts, and lunch boxes from mysteriously disappearing at school.
When shopping for labels, I love the brand Inch Bug. Their labels are waterproof, fade-proof, and made for back to school season.
A Little Organization Goes a Long Way
Back-to-school season will probably always come with a little chaos. But creating a few simple systems can make the transition easier for everyone.
Whether it’s resetting backpacks every afternoon, prepping lunches before bed, or giving all those school supplies a designated home, these small habits can help your family feel more organized, and hopefully make those busy school mornings just a little less stressful.
