There are few better feelings than calling it a night. The ceiling light is off, skincare is done, pajamas are on, and for once, nobody needs anything from you.

But getting into bed and actually winding down are two very different things. One involves putting on pajamas. The other involves convincing your brain that the email you received at 4:47 p.m. can, in fact, wait until tomorrow.

From a few relaxing stretches, to journaling and the right atmosphere, little changes can make relaxing before bed feel less like a chore and more like something to look forward to.

A better sleep routine isn’t just about how many hours you’re in bed. Your environment matters, too. According to Sleep Foundation, factors like bedroom temperature, light, noise, and your overall sleep environment can all affect sleep quality.

Start With Stretching

After spending the entire day sitting at a desk, commuting, carrying a bag on one shoulder, or generally existing in a body that has apparently forgotten how to relax, a little stretching can go a long way.

So before crawling into bed, take a few minutes to slow down and stretch out some of that built-up tension.

You don’t need an elaborate yoga routine, or a 45-minute guided video. A few gentle neck rolls, shoulder stretches, or forward folds can be enough to help you shift out of work mode and into something a bit more relaxed. Think of it as giving your body a chance to catch up with the fact that the day is, thankfully, over.

Adjust Your Atmosphere

First things first: turn off that pesky overhead light. Nothing says “I am absolutely not relaxing” quite like sitting in bed under the same fluorescent lighting you endured all day at work.

Instead, dim the lights, light a candle, and give your bedroom a little reset. Tidy the pile of clothes that has somehow become part of your furniture, clear off your nightstand, and let your space feel like less of a storage area and more like somewhere you actually want to spend the next eight hours.

Bonus points if your candle makes your apartment smell like a luxury hotel. Lavender, chamomile, sandalwood and cedarwood are popular choices for a calming atmosphere, so pick whatever scent says “take a deep breath and stay awhile.”

Put Your Thoughts on Paper

journal-wellness

You know that fun little trick your brain plays on you when you get into bed and suddenly remember every embarrassing thing you’ve ever said, everything you forgot to do today, and the email you definitely need to send tomorrow?

Yeah. Let’s not do that.

Keep a journal next to your bed and spend a few minutes getting those thoughts out of your head. This doesn’t need to be profound or well thought out. Think of it as a brain dump: jot down whatever is stressing you out, make a list of what you can do tomorrow, or write down something positive from your day.

The goal isn’t to become this generation’s next great writer. It’s simply to give your brain a place to put all those thoughts before you turn the lights out.

Make Your Bedroom a Little Quieter

You’ve done the stretching. You’ve lit the candle. You’ve written down your thoughts. You’re finally cozy in bed and then–

BANG!

Your upstairs neighbor has decided that midnight is the perfect time to rearrange their entire apartment.

For light sleepers or anyone who has trouble tuning out every creak, car horn, hallway conversation, barking dog, or mysterious thud coming from somewhere in the building, Ozlo Sleepbuds can be an easy addition to your bedtime setup.

Designed specifically for sleep, Ozlo Sleepbuds are made to be comfortable while you rest and offer a selection of sleep sounds to help create a more peaceful auditory environment. They’re especially handy for those nights when the outside world refuses to acknowledge that some of us have places to be tomorrow.

Because sometimes the final step in winding down isn’t another wellness ritual. It’s simply making the outside world a little easier to ignore.

Make Bedtime Feel Like a Treat

If you’re going to spend roughly a third of your life in bed, you might as well make it nice.

This is your excuse to upgrade those bedroom essentials that make getting into bed feel like an event: an eye mask, a silky pillowcase, ridiculously soft pajamas, or a blanket so comfortable that getting out of bed the next morning becomes a genuine personal conflict.

You don’t need to buy an entirely new bedroom. A few small luxuries can make an ordinary Tuesday night feel a little more special. And honestly, Tuesday deserves it.

Your Best Night Starts Before You Get Into Bed

The secret to a relaxing sleep environment isn’t necessarily some elaborate 14-step bedtime routine that requires a spreadsheet and three hours of free time. Sometimes, it’s just about giving yourself a little space to stop doing things.

Turn down the lights. Stretch out the day’s tension. Write down whatever is bouncing around in your head. Read a few pages. Put on your Sleepbuds. Get comfortable.

Basically, give yourself 30 minutes where nobody needs anything from you, including your phone.

Your to-do list can wait until tomorrow. Tonight, you’re off the clock.
