It’s still August, it’s 90 degrees outside, and Halloween is already starting to make its way into my house.
I know we’re still months away from October, but I’ve always liked getting a head start on the holidays. There’s something fun about spotting the first pumpkin on a store shelf, finding a seasonal candle, or bringing home a little something that makes the house feel different.
My husband actually finds my holiday progression pretty entertaining. He likes watching the house change throughout the year as one season slowly gives way to the next. By the time Halloween arrives, he’s already watched the pumpkins, candles, snacks, and other little details take over.
And that’s really how I like to celebrate: slowly.
Instead of waiting until October to pull everything together, I like to let the season build over time. A few subtle decorations in August, some festive food in September, and eventually a little Halloween inspiration in my wardrobe.
If you’re ready to get into the Halloween spirit early, here’s how I’m starting the celebration before October even arrives.
Start With a Few Seasonal Home Updates
Your home is probably the easiest place to start bringing in a little Halloween spirit, and you don’t have to go from summer straight to haunted house.
I’m not interested in completely transforming my living room in August. Instead, I look for pieces that introduce a little seasonal personality without taking over the room. Think warmer textures, darker colors, candles, or something with a vintage or whimsical feel.
One of the first things that caught my eye this year was the Halloween Ghost Candle from Target. It’s recognizable enough to feel like Halloween, but small enough to fit into my existing decor without making the entire room feel like October arrived overnight.

As we get closer to fall, I can start adding more obvious seasonal touches. Something like Pottery Barn’s Halloween Pumpkin Pillow is a fun way to make the house feel more festive while still looking like something I’d actually want on my couch.
The advantage of starting early is that you can build your collection gradually. Rather than buying everything in one trip, you have time to find pieces you genuinely love and figure out how you want to incorporate them into your home.
My approach looks something like this:
- August: Add one or two small seasonal pieces
- September: Layer in warmer textures, darker colors, and fall-inspired accents
- October: Bring out the pumpkins, ghosts, skulls, and everything else
There’s no need to rush it. Let the house evolve with the season.
Make Your Grocery Cart a Little More Festive
Once I’ve started decorating, Halloween inevitably follows me to the grocery store.
Seasonal food is one of my favorite ways to get into the spirit because it can turn an ordinary part of the day into something a little more fun. You don’t need to be hosting a Halloween party to enjoy pumpkin bread for breakfast or a seasonal treat after dinner.
My first stop is usually Trader Joe’s once their fall products start appearing. Their Pumpkin Bread & Muffin Mix is one of those seasonal staples I’ll pick up simply because I know I’ll want it once fall arrives.

For coffee, I’ll usually add Chobani’s Pumpkin Spice Creamer to the refrigerator. Pumpkin spice may be predictable, but that’s part of the fun. Some things become seasonal traditions precisely because we look forward to having them every year.
If you’re planning a Halloween gathering, starting your food shopping early can also give you time to experiment. Pick up a baking mix, try a seasonal recipe, or start collecting treats before you’re making a last-minute grocery run on October 30.
My grocery cart usually progresses like this:
- August: Pumpkin coffee, seasonal tea, maybe one baked good
- September: Baking mixes, snacks, and more fall flavors
- October: Candy—and plenty of it
Add a Little Halloween to Your Wardrobe
Eventually, Halloween makes its way into my wardrobe, too.
I’m not talking about costumes in August. I prefer finding pieces that hint at the season while still feeling wearable beyond October 31. A darker color palette, a subtle print, or a playful detail can make an everyday outfit feel a little more festive without looking like I got dressed for a Halloween party.
That’s exactly why I like MeUndies for this. Their underwear is already part of my everyday wardrobe, so adding a seasonal style feels like an easy way to bring a little Halloween into my routine without having to completely change what I’m wearing. The FeelFree Longline Bralette from MeUndies is a good example. The spiderweb detail gives it a distinctly Halloween feel, but it’s subtle enough to wear underneath an otherwise everyday outfit.
That’s my favorite way to start dressing for the season: a little Halloween goes a long way.
In August and September, I’ll keep those details understated. By October, I’m much more willing to let the seasonal prints, darker colors, and Halloween-inspired pieces become a bigger part of what I’m wearing.

Start Early, Enjoy More
If you’re hosting Halloween this year, starting early gives you more time to make the celebration feel like your own. You don’t need every detail figured out in August, but it’s a good time to start thinking about what you want—whether that’s hosting friends, planning a cozy night in, or simply making your home feel festive.
From collecting decorations and planning your menu to picking up seasonal treats and finding something fun to wear, getting a head start means you can enjoy the process instead of scrambling at the last minute. And honestly, the planning is part of the fun.
That’s ultimately why I like starting early. You don’t have to wait until October to enjoy the little things that make Halloween special. A ghost candle on the counter, pumpkin bread for breakfast, or a subtle spiderweb detail in your wardrobe can make an ordinary day feel a little more festive.
Starting early isn’t about rushing Halloween—it’s about giving yourself more time to enjoy it. So if you’ve already spotted the first pumpkin display and started thinking about the season, lean into it. Pick up the candle, try the pumpkin bread, add the pillow, and start making your plans.
October will get here soon enough. In the meantime, there’s no reason you can’t enjoy a little Halloween along the way.
